Concert Review: Brat Haus Allston

April 17, 2020 • Written by Alice Romanov

An up and coming house venue in Allston, Boston, MA. The Brat Haus was a fun but mixed bag of local favorites such as Gap Teeth and Your Diary. The venue’s first night was a Valentine’s Day show on a bitterly cold Friday night, featuring I wish I could skateboard and Gilroy.

Every time I go to a house show I’m met with a hectic and unique experience, and the Brat Haus certainly delivered. This was the second time I had seen Gap Teeth and Your Diary, previously at The Cliff. This second show was a lot more lowkey, starting off small but getting rowdier as more people showed up to see the bigger names. The opening act, Gilroy was a one-man band, hyping up the crowd with his looper pedals. His passionate and rivetting vocals were an emotional combo with the lyrical content. Next played I wish I could skateboard, followed by Your Diary who brought in a ton more energy from the crowd. The show ended with Gap Teeth and everyone went crazy. Gap Teeth played their usual few songs as well as one “from the archives”, one they hadn’t played in a while, said Erica from Gap Teeth. It was a pleasant treat. While they were playing their last couple of songs, there was a group of girls around me that started an all girl mosh pit near the back of the basement, which I quickly joined in. With all of these shows, I always get to meet so many new people from different walks of life. It is one of my favorite parts.

Although the Brat Haus basement was pretty cramped, the crowd was super inviting and the show was a lively and entertaining one. However, for a first house show, the Brat Haus wasn’t supervised. The upstairs was blocked off and there was no one at the door stamping people in. Thankfully the crowd was reasonable and hopefully the upcoming shows will be better managed. The next show at the Brat Haus is on Saturday, March 7th, featuring Bug Fight, Sweet Petunia, Tippecanoe, and Bad Object. Be there or be square; support your local house venues.
